City of Mishawaka Seasonal Herbicide Applicator in Mishawaka, Indiana

SEASONAL HERBICIDE APPLICATOR

DEPARTMENT:Parks Department SALARY:$14.00 HOURS:7am - 3pm

DEFINITION

Employee assists Landscape Manager with daily maintenance of all Municipal owned landscaping at Parks, Riverwalk, Municipal Buildings, Parking Lots, and Traffic Islands by application of general and specific use herbicides in accordance with Federal Label Laws to prevent and combat landscape weeds and unwanted growth.

B. Hand Tools (Shovels, Rakes, Broom, Pruners, Hand Saw, Lopers)

C. Power tools (Blowers, Hedge Trimmers, Weed Whips, Push Mowers)

D. PPE

E. City Vehicles

F. Golf/Work Carts

JOB LOCATION

Mishawaka Parks, Riverwalk, Municipal Owned Space

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Employee must be able to lift can carry up to 40lbs of water on their back at any give time to utilize the backpay herbicide application equipment. Applicator typically walks 8-12 miles per day in full sun and high temperatures. Must be able to push fertilizer spreaders that weigh 50 lbs up and down hills.

ENVIRONMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS

Employee is subject to all types of weather, loud noises from power tools, dirt, dust, and pollen from plants. Applicator is exposed to general fertilizers and herbicides daily.

ESSENTIALS FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

A. Employees use a variety of general and specific application herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers across municipal owned land to control unwanted weed and plant growth. This is the primary function of the job and 95% of the time will be spent doing these activities.

B. Employees perform a variety of landscape tasks utilizing horticulture knowledge. Tasks include: Weeding, cleaning, trash removal from landscape locations, planting, pruning, and any other tasks requested by Landscape Manager

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

A. Apply general and specific user herbicides in all municipal owned flower beds, walking and spraying around desired plant material

B. Application of preventative herbicides in key areas to reduce unwanted weeds and plants from germinating

C. Application of fungicides and specialty products in our Greenhouse to help control mods and pests

D. Maintain clean and orderly landscape across the City of Mishawaka by: Keeping flower beds free of weeds and unwanted plants, removing trash from parks and flower beds, keeping bushes and trees trimmed, and flowerbeds mulched

E. Plant flowers, both annual and perennial, each year at our show parks, municipal signs, and park signs

F. Keep sidewalks clean of debris left by plants, people, and geese using leaf blowers

G. Assist with Adopt-a-Park volunteer events setup, teardown, and overseeing groups of volunteers to ensure quality results

H. Work inside the MEF Community Greenhouse with seedling plants

I. Some carpentry work building and maintaining flowerbeds and structures in our Community Garden

J. Clean and maintain equipment

K. Any job requested by Landscape Manager or Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

A. Drivers License Required

B. High School Diploma or Equivalent

C. Class 3a pesticide applicators license preferred
