Your Role:

This position is responsible for driving all strategic, exploratory, and technical aspects of global innovative packaging technology solutions. A strong entrepreneurial mindset is required for this position to be successful.

This position will use input from the packaging industry leaders (internal to O-I and external), customer and channel insights, including industry trends (by regions, segments, and markets), key business drivers, alternative packaging substrates, adjacent industries, academia, and influencers (e.g. regulations) to successfully develop a multi-horizons roadmap for innovative packaging technology solutions and to scout, explore, assess, develop, nurture, prototype, pilot, and release corresponding technologies for industrialization and commercialization.

The role will be responsible for the following main activities:

(i) Define strategy and own roadmap of innovative packaging technology solutions, and ensure alignment with Enterprise strategic direction;

(ii) Provide technical expertise and coordinate related global cross-functional activities including definition of business cases and value propositions;

(iii) Lead corresponding technology scouting and exploration activities;

(iv) Assess, develop, nurture, prototype, pilot, and release corresponding technologies solutions for successful and timely industrialization and commercialization;

(v) Manage and prioritize the global portfolio of relevant initiatives, programs, and projects, including timeline, milestones, and deliverables; and

Develop, lead, and manage global resources (internal and external to O-I) to achieve objectives, including funding and resources needs.

  • Primary leader and champion for exploration and development of innovative packaging technology solutions

  • Work closely with Sales & Marketing leadership to enable success of the commercial innovation strategy

  • Work closely with the global and regional leadership to ensure that packaging technology solutions align with business strategies and needs

Your Responsibilities:

  • Take an entrepreneurial approach to integrate all global efforts engaged by O-I in innovative packaging technology solutions

  • Create a clear vision for success, set strategic direction, define and own related multi-horizons roadmap, build corresponding programs and projects portfolio, and lead all phases from exploration to piloting of the technology to take full advantage of commercialization opportunities

  • Present underlying business cases to senior management for approval and funding, as needed

  • Lead, manage, or coordinate all activities, including providing technical expertise, securing and allocating resources (people and money) to achieve objectives on time and on budget, progressing through stage-gate process for all phases of the programs

  • Build, lead, and manage a strong global technical team with adequate and complementary skills, including researchers with advanced education and work experience in industrial design and engineering, chemistry and material science, and new product development and innovation, especially in the field of packaging and/or food and beverage industry; Coach, mentor, and develop these talents

  • Identify, develop, and manage external partnerships to address O-I needs for innovative packaging technology solutions in the most time- and cost-effective manner

  • Manage IP portfolio to create and maintain a strong competitive advantage for O-I

  • Collaborate across functions such as Sales & Marketing, Manufacturing and Operations, Finance, Strategy & Integration, Legal, EHS and Sustainability, and Project Management to align and advance in an agile manner during the different phases of the projects

  • Develop and implement a strong communication strategy with all relevant functional and regional stakeholders

Reporting Relationships:

You will report to the VP, Global R&D and Technology Strategy

Leads the Global Innovative Technology Solutions team

Position Requirements:

About You:

  • Bachelor or Master Degree in Science or Marketing (or relevant area such as innovation)

  • PhD or MBA preferred

  • Minimum of 15-20 years of proven success in leading global R&D team, technical product and process innovation, or application development (or alternatively strategic marketing or business development, preferably in Food & Beverage industry)

  • Strong experience in “mastering the matrix” and working cross-functionally and cross-culturally, with key stakeholders, partners, and customers

  • Demonstrated experience in inspiring others with a clear vision and strategy, appropriately challenging status quo; Strong decision making and judgment skills

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, ability to lead by influence

  • Flexibility and ability to interact with all levels of management and employees, both external and internal to O-I; Team orientated individual – must have excellent people skills

  • Project Management experience is a plus

  • 25% global travel may be required
