JOB PURPOSE

The Director of Fitness and Wellness is responsible for the strategic development, implementation and administration of programs infitness, wellness, instruction , and other programs as needed. This individual supervises seven full-time staff and over sixty part-time staff. Specific responsibilities include program management, recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of professional, student and contingent staff, development and oversight of operating budgets, development and enforcement of program policies and procedures, and revenue generation.

CORE DUTIES

Management Responsibilities (30%)

  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure opportunities for the Stanford community to improve their quality of life through non-credit fitness, instructional and wellness initiatives.

  • Instruct classes within the portfolio of personal training, group fitness, recreation and wellness programs and classes.

  • Effectively implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day activities of the program through inspired leadership of staff and collaboration with colleagues.

  • Manage the coordination of non-credit recreation skill based classes, group fitness and personal training programs including planning and scheduling classes, coordinating facility use and instructor resources, purchasing and maintaining equipment, and quality assurance.

  • Implements the delivery and evaluation of programs and personnel.

  • Manage the associated risks and liability, evaluation and development of programs, including monitoring and updating of policies and procedures as well as service and safety standards.

  • Provide relevant information and materials to the Marketing and Communication team in the development of a comprehensive package of promotional efforts and the development of health education content for social media, flyers and brochures.

  • Ensure clean, safe, fun, innovative and inviting programming to various constituencies.

  • Act as the primary contact and content expert for areas of responsibility.

Staff Management (30%)

  • Provide leadership and education to full-time staff, contingent and student employees.

  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, scheduling, motivation and retention of staff.

  • Provide verbal and written evaluation of work performance.

  • Plan, organize and facilitate training, work assignments, and if needed, disciplinary action for personnel.

Administrative Responsibilities (30%)

  • Contribute to the budget planning process, track annual budget and modify as necessary, monitor and approve expenses.

  • Ensure the accurate administration of online program registration system(s)

  • Regularly collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.

  • Working with the assessment committee, collect satisfaction surveys and customer response forms; create reports and recommend solutions.

  • Ensure prompt and effective verbal and written communication.

Internal and External Leadership and Collaboration (10%)

  • Serve as the department liaison to the Office of Accessible Education to respond and coordinate adaptive and inclusive programming, services, and partnerships.

  • Provide leadership, vision, and teamwork as a member of the Recreation and Wellness Leadership Team; proactively contribute to strategic planning and conduct other duties and initiatives as assigned.

  • Collaborate with university contacts including, but not limited to, DAPER, SLED, Vaden Health Center, BeWell, Residential Education, and other wellness collaborators on campus.

  • Champion the program within Stanford Recreation and Wellness, and at the university level and/or to external stakeholders.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE POSITION, YOU WILL HAVE:

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and five years of related experience or a combination of relevant education and relevant experience. A Master’s degree in exercise related fields is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in fitness programming, health promotion, and/or recreation instruction.

  • Experience in developing and implementing training, curriculum and educational tools.

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills to groups of various sizes.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and develop strategies for revenue generating programs while meeting budgetary goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.

  • Demonstrated collaboration, creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, judgment and decision-making skills with a broad range of people, including program areas, stakeholders, vendors, and equipment suppliers.

  • Advanced knowledge of current risk management practices in recreational facilities

  • At least an intermediate proficiency in at least half of the NIRSA Competencies.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide a high standard of customer service.

  • Experience with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and other technology platforms used within the campus recreation industry.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Current CPR, AED and First Aid certification

  • Group Fitness, Personal Training, or other related credentials offered through accredited professional associations such as: ACE, AFAA, NASAM, or NCCA.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to exert physical effort, including the ability to lift a minimum of 30 lbs., bending, squatting, reaching, or being on feet for long periods of time.

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

  • Ability to teach multiple types of exercise and/or recreation classes.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Routine work during normal business hours with required and supported flexible scheduling based on professional needs. Will work occasional extended hours, evenings and weekends for programs or departmental events

  • Work often is spent in both indoor and outdoor facilities interacting with participants.

  • This is an in-person position.

The expected pay range for this position is $99,000 to $106,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
